First-Time Unemployment Claims Rise Due to Texas Floods

First-time unemployment claims for the week ending September 6, 2025, rose to 263,000 (seasonally adjusted), the highest level since October 2021. This 27,000-claim increase from the previous week was significantly influenced by a surge of over 15,000 claims in Texas due to its recent devastating floods and extended unemployment assistance program.

Excluding the Texas impact, the overall trend for other states showed a slight decline in claims.
